Mayo Fire Safety Quiz

In Mayo we are constantly looking for new initiatives to promote our Fire Safety Message. Last year’s competition involved children from across the County entering an online quiz competition. Together with the assistance of www.graduate.ie, we devised an online quiz targeted at primary school children in County Mayo. Students who completed the quiz correctly were entered into a draw to win some great prizes.

Fire Brigade headquarters in Castlebar was the venue for the special presentation night for the competition in 2018, where 5 lucky national school children were presented with their prizes. The Fire Service were delighted to host a presentation and reception in Castlebar Fire Station for the children, their families and teachers. The presentations were made to the children by the Cathaoirleach, Mr. Blackie Gavin (a long serving fire fighter with Castlebar Fire Brigade) and the Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Mr. Peter Hynes. Also, in attendance for the presentations were Mr. John Condon, Director of Services and Mr. Seamus Murphy, Chief Fire Officer.

We want to reinforce the fire safety message which is actively rolled out by our fire fighters annually in the county using the National Primary Schools programme for Fire Safety in the home.

The quiz involves children entering an online quiz competition, restricted to children from national schools in County Mayo alone. Children log onto the website – www.graduate.ie and answer questions in relation to fire safety in the home. Students who complete the quiz correctly are entered into a draw to win prizes.

Our aim is to educate children so that they in turn educate their families, making children the ambassadors of fire safety in the home.

The key messages we are targeting in the quiz in 2019 are:

The four golden rules of fire safety in the home:

  1. Fit working smoke alarms and test them regularly;

  2. Make a fire escape plan and practice it often;

  3. Check for fire dangers in the home and correct them;

  4. Carry out a “last thing at night” routine.

The competition will be divided into two age groups;

  • 1st to 3rd Class students; and

  • 4th to 6th Class students.

A prize for First, Second and Third places will be awarded in each Category, with a presentation event being held towards the end of November/ start of December 2019 in the Fire Brigade Headquarters, Humbert Way, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The closing date for the competition is Monday 18th November 2019 and winners will be notified within 2 weeks of the closing date.
